Underground Railroad in Illinois - What Was it and How Did it Work?
On June 19, 1865, U.S. troops brought freedom to the enslaved people of Galveston, Texas. The anniversary of that day has grown into the Juneteenth holiday that celebrates the end of slavery everywhere in America.
But enslaved people were emancipating themselves long before that. They risked their lives to escape and seek freedom in the North, aided by other enslaved people, free Blacks and sympathetic white people. This secret network was known as the Underground Railroad.
In this video, ALPLM historian Dr. Jacob K. Friefeld discusses the Underground Railroad, particularly as it operated in Illinois, with two guests: Deanda Johnson from the Network to Freedom Program at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, and Tim Townsend from the Lincoln Home National Historic Site.

It's easy to forget that Abraham Lincoln suffered his share of losses and setbacks on the way to the White House. The ALPLM has acquired a letter that reveals his reaction to one of those setbacks. He was frustrated and felt unfair accusations were chipping away at his support. The public has never seen Lincoln's original, handwritten version of this letter. Its owner wrote out a copy 150 years...

Marines were part of the Navy just a branch, so who care what jarheads think.
It's not given the credit its do because it's a naval battle.
Ridiculous shouty presentation.
He was a coward.
"The war could be won in the West but lost in the East. " Heard that somewhere.
Grant was a much better general than Lee, Grant controlled and was responsible for all Union armies. Lee only had to command a single army on a single axis.
When I was there, They had about 3 artifacts on display.
IS VINCE STILL WITH US ,
Excellent presentation! Thoroughly enjoyed it!
Soldiers of all ages and generations who’ve experienced combat, will always find common ground in their funny stories. No matter the battlefield, or era they will find common ground in the levity of the hells they walked through.
Well done!
gotta be one of the first selfies, the best
There are some less well informed watchers. Ergo, a few dates would be helpful.
If only McClellan knew how truly smart Lincoln was.
Given all the shared heritage in the US, including the fact that we ended chattel slavery, the choice to venerate the four years of the slavers' failed rebellion as one's "heritage" is a deliberately and consciously racist choice. Anyone who grew up in the South, as I did, knows this full well, and knows EXACTLY how these people talk when they think they're safely alone among racist friends. It's "Hate Pretending to be Heritage," and they ALL know it.
Dates of the battles? They could be included in the title..
Lincoln and Kennedy were wacked by the Jesuit Order 😊
I used ti live near the Richter Farm and Atzerodt walked past my home when he went there after the assassination. People said a suspicious man had walked up Clopper Road and the Yankee Cavalry caught him.
Thank you soooooo much for posting.. I truly enjoyed this informative lecture
Kefauver comes off as little more left leaning.
Correct me, I think France has nuclear energy. It's actually, arguably cleaner energy.
I think Stevenson was the better candidate.
Less babbling,more house showing.....
The curator did a wonderful job
Yes Lincoln freed the slaves then Grant signed the act of 1871 and enslaved everyone at the time and their future descendants to the crown and the Bank of Rothschild in the city of London and that's where our taxes have been going since Grant signed the act
This is one of the most racist videos I've ever watched Middle class who you jiving, first white man what kind of bullshit is this
As she spoke it would have been better if the house was viewed more.
Early last year I wrote to Mr Speranza and he sent me a personalized autographed copy of his book. He has since passed on, but I will cherish that book for the rest of my life. Thank you for your service, Vince, you badass! 🇺🇸
I just learned about this man and I’m sad he passed and so recently
So chilling to think, in an alternate timeline, nearly all those celebrating sailors perished on the beaches of Japan in Operation Downfall, the bloodiest slaughter in history.
By the by, when doing a video presentation of a topic, keep the focus on the screen, NOT the room, where the items you point out, BECOME INVISIBLE. I mean really. Video editing 101.
: )
My great grandfather once gave a donut to Sherman’s aide-de-camp, who passed it to the general. High on the sugar buzz, Sherman laid waste to Georgia.
Its recorded in 2010 but it looks like 1980.
"in 1931 he was part of a coup to overthrow the prime minister. The coup failed. So what would happen if an American tried to do something like that, it would be bad news"... 2024, USA.... We have an ex-president and his top cronies still walking free after trying to overturn the will of the people, a coup, in 2020. With 35 to 45% of the population okay with that. A man who brags about receiving love letters from a psychopath dictator, worships Vladimir Putin, a political party and news media outlets that promote Russian propaganda. Is against giving aid to country that's been invaded by a dictator. I ask you doctor, if America 2024 was America in 1931, which side of the war would we join? Does the Constitution allow for half the country to join the allies and the other half ally with japan? We could get a world war and a civil war done at the same time over in Europe and in the Pacific. That would spare us a lot of collateral damage.
Wow. Thank you sir for this rendition of the Gettysburg Address. I felt like I was seeing Lincoln deliver it himself. It gave me chills.
Australia sent a few cruisers to help in the battle of the Coral Sea. DePue seems to have not noticed
Shut up and get to the lesson
There is lots of info regarding historical clothing on the web these days. I think you will find that corsets (if fitted correctly , like today's bras) were comfortable and not meant to be "tight laced" ever. Only a very small percentage of women would have tight laced because it was so impractical and uncomfortable. Regarding the hairstyles of the Victorian era (and even Edwardian era) the ladies also saved their hair to make extra hair pieces for a fuller hairdo (that was in a perfect color match since it was their own hair)
“Hysteria” was a broad term applied to most women who exhibited emotion- outside of the patriarch lead decided ideal of womanhood. I don’t know if we would have hospitalized her today as we recognize several of her issues and there exist outpatient support. Had her living son been so informed, he might have opted for in home care vs sending her away as her “illness” was a blemish on him and his attempts to make a living.
